Ten Reasons why even a little bit of porn is a bad idea.
May 28, 2013/
According to Ryan Foley of Covenant Eyes, we have every reason to be alarmed by the invasion of pornography in our homes and culture. With 1 in every 8 internet searches being for erotic content and an estimated value of the mobile porn market over $ 2 billion, this is not only big business, it’s a big problem.
Here are ten reasons he cites (among many) why even a little bit of porn is a bad idea:
- Porn is addictive and while the term “sex addiction” or “porn addiction” is not found in the diagnostic literature, but it is a widely accepted phenomenon in the field of psychology.
- Porn leads to an exaggerated perception of sexual activity in society, fostering the belief that sexual promiscuity is natural and that casual sex and premarital sex is preferable
- Porn diminishes trust between couples
- Porn leads to a cynicism about the need for love and affection between intimate partners
- Porn diminishes attraction to one’s intimate partner
- Porn use leads to a lower satisfaction with relational sex and a loss of interest in relational sex
- Porn use causes an exhaustion of one’s sexual response system, exacerbating impotency
- Porn encourages the objectification of women and promotes acceptance of “rape myths”
- Porn users experience a deeper sense of loneliness, a loss of sexual self-esteem
- Porn generates a desire to see more pornography and a greater variety of niche pornography
Pornography use costs, not just dollars, and not just the consumer. Everyone in the community has been affected by the ‘pornification’ of our culture, the most vulnerable being our children.
