Is marriage meant to make you happy?

|

Byron & Francine Pirola discuss the purpose of marriage is this excerpt from The Marriage Kit, an online course for married couples.

Marriage isn’t meant to make us happy. Rather, marriage is meant to help us grow and ultimately that leads to fulfilment. There can be no fulfilment without growth.

We all seek happiness, but happiness is a superficial, short-lived emotion. It comes and goes in response to the circumstances of our lives.

On the other hand, fulfilment is more of a sustained state and usually, it results in positive emotions like happiness. It’s a higher goal than simply ‘being happy’.

The take home message: marriage is all about growth. Growing as individuals, growing in love, growing in virtue, growing in faith.
